First Responder

Equine Assisted Programs

First Responder Focus

The foundation serves a diverse population of clients, and also focuses on training and treatment for the first responder community, namely, law enforcement.

Kindle Hill Foundation chose to emphasize law enforcement because we recognized the need in this professional population, and the potential benefits in improved physical wellness and mental health.

Our programs are designed to support first responder wellness in three general areas:

  • Communication (learning)

  • Mental health (therapy)

  • Professional and personal self-care (training)

  • Kindle Hill Foundation’s proprietary Equine Assisted learning program is a personal growth and development series of 10-12 sessions.

Sessions are held between a first responder and a Master’s in Counseling candidate or principal. The session may include one or more horses.

This HIPAA compliant program is focused on individuals who may benefit from support to sharpen or advance self and interpersonal skills such as:

    • Nonverbal communication

    • Empathy

    • Self-care

    • Improving personal and professional relationships

    • Self confidence

    • Dealing with difficult people

    • Negotiation and partnering

    • Scripting (overcoming objections in public perceptions)

  • Kindle Hill Foundation’s Equine Assisted Therapy program is custom designed to be complementary to talk therapy and medication, as well as alternative methods, such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

Our program serves law enforcement agencies, SWAT and Negotiator teams, firefighters, and EMS professionals on a HIPAA compliant confidential basis.

The program is a series of private sessions between the client and a certified and licensed therapist. Sessions include one or more horses.

    • First Responder sessions (between 10-12) are paid by the foundation’s endowment, grants, and donations from the public.

    • Other program costs may be subsidized or offered on a sliding scale, according to need.

    • Sessions are one hour and by appointment.

    • Sessions are self-scheduled between the client and therapist.

    • Family members may take part in sessions.

  • Kindle Hill Foundation’s proprietary Equine Assisted Training program was originally developed by Saly Glassman and Kenneth Lawson, Police Chief of Whitpain, Pennsylvania Police Department, and enhanced with the help of law enforcement agencies all over the region. The curriculum is based on the principles of natural horsemanship, and aligns with the law enforcement principles Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics (ICAT) and Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) in support of regional and state mandates.

The curriculum focuses on two main critical goals:

    • The development of advanced skills in de-escalation, negotiation, and partnering.

    • Techniques for managing stress, anxiety, PTSD, and other rigorous demands of the first responder culture.

There is a standard series composed of multiple 90-minute sessions, and an accelerated version which can be shortened to one to two sessions.

Sessions are held with a maximum of six first responders. Participants receive a certification of achievement after attending all sessions and completing an evaluation of their experience.

Why Horses?

The horse is a living, breathing animal and can be a remarkable partner for learning. The behaviors of horses are not script based. They don’t “play roles” because they are who they are. Horses will react based on a combination of their personalities, and our behavior towards them. This can be positive or negative, just like people, and adjustments are often necessary. This experience is not “finite,” and some strategies don’t work all the time, or they may not work with all horses. If we learn just one thing from each experience, we can store that away and “grab that tool” when we need it.

We gratefully acknowledge the law enforcement agencies who have participated in our Equine Assisted Training Program, and we welcome all first responders!
