Equine Assisted Therapy for Autism

A Different Kind of Connection

Every person on the autism spectrum is unique. Communication styles, sensory needs, and ways of relating to the world vary from one individual to the next. At Kindle Hill Foundation, we believe that each individual’s characteristics and needs deserve to be honored.

Our horses don't expect you to communicate in any particular way. They simply respond to who you are, right now, in this moment. For many individuals on the spectrum, that kind of honest, pressure-free connection opens doors that other approaches have not.

Why Horses and Autism Are a Natural Fit

Horses communicate through body language, energy, and presence, rather than words. This creates a shared language that many autistic individuals find instinctively familiar and accessible. There are no hidden social rules to decode, no ambiguous facial expressions to interpret. The interaction is immediate, honest, and real.

Time spent with our horses can support:

  • Sensory regulation and body awareness

  • Emotional expression and recognition

  • Non-verbal and verbal communication skills

  • Confidence and self-esteem

  • Patience, focus, and turn-taking

  • Social connection in a calm, structured environment

  • Reduced anxiety

Horses also offer something deeply grounding: rhythm and routine. Grooming, walking alongside a horse, and simply being in the barn creates a predictable, sensory-rich experience that many individuals find calming and regulating.

Who This Program Is For

Our equine assisted therapy program serves children, teens, and adults on the autism spectrum. Sessions are tailored to each person's goals, communication style, and comfort level. No two sessions look exactly alike, because no two people are exactly alike.

Parents and caregivers are welcome to be part of the experience.

No horse experience is needed, just openness to experiencing something a little different.

What to Expect

All sessions take place on the ground. There is no riding involved. Your licensed therapist will guide activities designed around your individual goals, at a pace that feels safe and comfortable.

Sessions are private, HIPAA-compliant, and held by appointment at our farm in Blue Bell, Montgomery County, PA.
